The National Federation of Nonpublic School State Accrediting Associations is an organization of state accrediting associations that serves nonpublic schools throughout the United States. Through the state chapters, NFNSSAA accredits over 700 elementary and secondary schools with an enrollment of over 200,000 students.

Membership in NFNSSAA is determined by a set of accreditation standards and criteria; see the home page of the NFNSSAA website. Accrediting associations who are members of NFNSSAA are referred to as ‘state chapters’. To apply for membership, contact the President of NFNSSAA; the name and number is listed under ‘members’ on the NFNSSAA website.

The mission of The National Federation of Nonpublic School State Accrediting Associations is to ensure that state chapters are committed to enhancing the quality of education within their member schools through continuous assessment and evaluation of the state’s accreditation process. The NFNSSAA annual meeting and reporting system allows each state chapter the opportunity to review its accreditation standards and criteria as a means of ongoing assessment. During the annual meeting state chapter representatives present documentation of their compliance with the NFNSSAA standards and criteria, report on educational challenges within their states, and address issues that need long-range planning and development.

Parents and educators of nonpublic students are serious about accountability, ethics, and their school’s mission. Membership in the NFNSSAA provides an added assurance that the nonpublic schools are true to their missions and purposes. Other accrediting associations exist for similar purposes but our nonpublic schools benefit most by accrediting associations that are sensitive to their special needs and purposes while maintaining high standards.

A State Chapter of NFNSSAA can be comprised of various nonpublic schools and systems. All NFNSSAA State Chapters must admit any nonpublic school that meets the state’s criteria for membership. If a school within the state is seeking dual accreditation, both accrediting associations must be part of the validation team and site visit. Dues for NFNSSAA membership are annually assessed to state chapters and have been kept at a minimum of $250 for over ten years to encourage state chapters to join and benefit for the services to the NFNSSAA organization.

The NFNSSAA is recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Immigration and Naturalization (INS) (January, 1988), Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the U.S. Department of Education Office of Non-Public Education., and the U.S. Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).
